Super Bowl 56 has come and gone and you know who won, but you probably have no idea what, and how much food Americans ate on game day!
While some Americans were just focused on how their favorite team would do, and others were more excited about the commercials or the half-time show, one thing we all agreed on was that we had to eat and drink – a lot!
Chicken Wings
It’s remarkable we have any chickens left after Super Bowl weekend! The National Chicken Council estimated that 1.42 billion wings would be consumed. The pandemic has already led to an increase in wing consumption. Sit-down restaurants gave way to more take-out and convenience food options. Restaurants that served wings and pizza were already set up for convenient take-out before the pandemic, so naturally thrived.
Will genetic engineering come up with a four-winged chicken in time for the big game? – only time will tell.
… and Speaking of Pizza
It may come as no surprise that we eat a lot of pizza during the game. It is estimated that more than 12 and a half billion pizzas get consumed. Pizzas are convenient for large groups and require little in the way of utensils or condiments so are great for distracted eating!
& Chips – of course!
One chip hardly weighs anything…it’s almost like a feather, right? Well, not when you add up how much we eat during an average Super Bowl game. Americans eat around 28 million pounds of chips during the game. We also eat about “4 million pounds of pretzels, 3.8 million pounds of popcorn, and 2.5 million pounds of nuts…” * In total, fans ate about 112 million pounds of chips and other snacks, according to SNAC International.
Wash it down with a Beer!
Americans drink approximately 325 million gallons of beer during Super Bowl. That equals a gallon of beer for every man woman and child in the U.S.! A Gallon of beer equals about 10 cans… in one day! That equates to about 1.3 billion dollars spent just on beer. We clearly love our beer. Of course, beer is perfect for washing down chicken wings, pizza, and snacks, so it’s a no-brainer and part of the reason so many people call in sick for work on the day after the Super Bowl.
… and It All Cost A Bit More This Time
Yes, the pandemic and supply chain issues combined to grab more of your money when eating on game day.
It may come as no surprise that some of your favorite foods have been hit hard by labor shortages, transportation issues, and increased production costs.
Guacamole is another game day favorite and avocados have just hit a record high.Game day is the biggest day for avocado consumption in the U.S. and prices typically spike leading up to the game. Fortunately, Mexico has had a bumper harvest but pricing power is also strong. “A 20-pound box of Hass avocados from Mexico’s largest exporter to the US costs $6.29 more than it did during the same time period last year…” **
Who Won?
Well, the Rams may be feeling full of themselves with their first Big Game win since 1999, but many of us are feeling full of beer and junk food. Now you know more about the kinds of things we ate and how much we ate. This year we ate more and paid more for it, but at least we scored an exciting, and delicious day!
