Fastcility services coffee machines for our customers every day, so it may come as no surprise that we have covered coffee-related news all year. This year has had two major themes.

  1. Starbucks: Changes to their business and their menu.
  2. Coffee cultivation has been forced to change due to climate change and high demand.

Before we get to the recap, there is some interesting news that comes from an interview with Starbucks’ new CEO Brian Niccol. Niccol was interviewed on Good Morning America recently.

Starbucks’ New CEO Spills The Beans

Niccol is planning some big changes for the world’s coffee icon. He wants Starbucks to return to its roots as a “community coffee house.” He may be hoping to revive that idea of Starbucks being a “third place” – something between home and work.

He also wants to reduce wait times for all services. The target would be for customers to get a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds.

There are also plans to bring back the coffee condiment bar and Sharpies. Sharpies for writing the name on the cup fosters a more personal customer experience.

Niccol will simplify the menu to reduce wait times for espresso drinks to less than four minutes. Part of the solution is bringing in more advanced equipment to stores.

Now; Our Roundup of Coffee News From 2024:

Improve The Taste Of Your Coffee

A recent study from the University of Oregon found that adding a small amount of water before grinding coffee beans can improve flavor. The water reduces static electricity, preventing micro-clumping and allowing for a more efficient extraction of flavor. This technique, known as the “Ross droplet” method, is particularly beneficial for fine grind pour-over and espresso. (This method is most effective on fine grinds.) January

Starbucks and Unions:

Starbucks Workers United successfully organized 21 locations in a single day, prompting student demonstrations and calls for boycotts. Starbucks, facing numerous union victories, has resorted to aggressive tactics like union-busting and lawsuits, including a recent one over pro-Palestinian social media posts. These actions have resulted in public backlash, reduced traffic, and significant financial expenditures, serving as a cautionary tale for other companies. February

Robusta Coffee and Changing Climate

Robusta beans, known for their resilience and versatility, are gaining popularity due to climate change and improved production methods.  Although Arabica beans are traditionally considered superior in taste, Robusta beans are becoming more sought after for their unique flavor profile and ability to withstand harsh growing conditions.  As the global demand for coffee continues to rise and with challenging growing conditions, Robusta beans are poised to become a dominant player in the market. Arabica Prices Soar

The global coffee market is experiencing a significant disruption due to a combination of severe drought in Brazil and a devastating typhoon in Vietnam. These events have led to a 40% increase in coffee prices this year, with Arabica coffee futures reaching a 13-year high. The shortage of Robusta coffee, exacerbated by the typhoon, has forced buyers to turn to Arabica, further driving up prices and impacting consumers worldwide. September
